July 2009
As our season winds to a close on July 31st, we'd like to share with you the latest Meridian Club news and some of our upcoming plans.
We will be opening for the 2009-2010 season on Sunday, November 1. Bookings have been coming in steadily, so if you have particular dates that you wish to reserve, please call soon. We are looking forward to exciting times.
Those of you who haven't been to The Meridian Club yet just might want to see why it is that we have such a high return rate. Come ahead, we dare you. We wager you'll become one of our "regulars". The odds are in our favor.
We look forward to sharing this lovely island with you.
Warm regards,
Bev and Wally Plachta

| We Are Fam-i-ly ! Every year in June, as the season begins to wind down, we have a staff appreciation party where we reverse roles. The staff are our guests and the homeowners and senior managers serve as chefs, waiters, bartenders and kitchen workers.
It is always a very special event and helps reinforce the camaraderie and family-like atmosphere that has always been a distinctive feature of the Meridian Club. Dancing continues well into the night and many new dance moves are always displayed. This year, the following employees were honored for their lengthy service:
* Ruth Wright (Staff Cook) has been with Pine Cay since 1973
* Duke Delancy (Assistant island Manager/Maintenance Supervisor) since 1976
* Raymond Campbell (Marine Supervisor) has been with us since 1978
* Corina Neat Handfield (Wesley's wife) Housekeeping--has been with Pine Cay since 1979
* Floyd Forbes has been serving our guests since 1979.
* Ubelese (UB) Delancy (Duke's brother) has been with us since 1982 and without whom our buggies would not run!!
* Wesley Handfield has been serving our guests since 1982.
* Roosevelt Outten retired this year after 25 years of service. We will still see him on the Cay as a sub-contractor. Read more

Jo Jo the Dolphin Jo Jo the bottlenose dolphin, a wild dolphin who appears to prefer the companionship of humans to fellow dolphins, is probably the most famous resident of the Turks and Caicos Islands and a long-time friend of the Meridian Club.
Many of our repeat guests have been privileged to see and swim with him over the years. Although he is now over 30 years old, a ripe old age for a dolphin, he still appears to be in good health and visits us regularly. Guests staying at the Club saw him several times in June. |

Other Wildlife
We have had an abundance of wildlife around Pine Cay this season. There are more iguanas on the island than we've seen in many years.
Flamingos have been visiting our ponds and occasionally have been seen in the tidal flats off Fort George Cay. Ospreys routinely nest atop a couple of the tiki huts along the beach, offering some interesting photo opportunities.
There was a good migration of humpback whales offshore between January and April and deep sea fishermen reported spotting some pilot whales and a couple whale sharks.
Guests kayaking in the Aquarium this season have enjoyed many close-up encounters with sea turtles and in June some guests were treated there to a small dolphin performing multiple rolls for them. |

Diversions
As if swimming, fishing, snorkeling, tennis, beachcombing, kayaking and biking aren't enough, our guests always surprise us with other forms of entertainment.
One new guest enthralled everyone with a spectacular new sand sculpture every day during his stay.
Another guest, known affectionately as "Spoons", is shown below setting a new Pine Cay record in an activity that might be somewhat less aesthetic, but equally challenging. His wife said she's very proud of him but relieved that no one back home can possibly identify him from the photograph.

| Summer Projects
As part of our continuing commitment to upgrade our service, this summer we plan on constructing an office addition, conference room and massage/spa room. This building will be attached to the side of the existing office facility next to the computer room.
The massage/spa room is long overdue as massages have been very popular even without a dedicated space. In addition we will have a skilled Balinese masseuse to work for us full time. This will enable us to offer massages on a more convenient schedule. She will also offer a variety of other spa treatments, including manicures, pedicures and facials.
